Dr. Vierelina Fernández is a Postdoctoral Scholar, Researcher, and Lecturer in the Center for Latin American Studies at Rutgers University. She received her PhD in International Relations, along with a Master's in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, from Florida International University. Her areas of expertise include Mexico and Colombia, feminism, gender-based violence/femicide, guerrilla insurrections, violence, and security. Dr. Fernández is currently developing a book project exploring the extent and impact of the Colombian FARC's gendered attitudes and the role of these attitudes in the 2016 peace deal. Most recently, she conducted 50 in-person interviews with FARC ex-combatants and over 150 surveys as a part of her research. Her work has also taken her to Mexico, Ecuador, Argentina, Turkey, Germany, and France, where she has explored these same issues of insurgency, violence, and gender as they operate in distinct contexts.
