Subnational Americas Strategies

Amid increased uncertainty surrounding trade and economic development as well as escalating geopolitical tensions, there is an increased bipartisan interest in promoting near and re-shoring efforts away from Asia and toward the Americas. This can provide an opportunity for communities to improve relations with Latin America and the Caribbean while building economic linkages that foster development across the Americas. My team and I have identified a set of cities and states that we view as potential beneficiaries of this shift—areas with deep, but underdeveloped connections to other parts of the Americas.

PASA collaborates with municipal and state governments to map the historical, economic, diaspora, and cultural ties to identify opportunities that allow localities to become hubs for inter-American exchange. However, civil society and business connections are only part of a holistic approach for becoming a hub for inter-American commerce and diplomacy—it requires developing governmental leadership and policy frameworks to facilitate and catalyze regional dynamics. By supporting the development of ecosystems that incorporate civil society, academia, government, and business groups, we generate strategies that create the environment to maximize connections across the Americas.

In addition to our consulting in this space, PASA further strengthens local interest in the Americas through our Beyond the Beltway initiative which allows us to develop and strengthen the civil society linkages critical for becoming a "Gateway of the Americas."
