The Americas are sometimes referred to as a “zone of peace” because of general lack of interstate wars in the region. Despite this, militaries across the region play an important role in inter-American relations and in addressing challenges facing nations—from natural disasters and running government functions to fighting crime and supporting global peace keeping missions. At the same time, countries and companies must navigate growing U.S.-Chinese strategic rivalry in the region.

Navigating Strategic Rivalry in the Americas
Since the turn of the 21st century, China's footprint in the Western Hemisphere has grown exponentially. This expansion has resulted in increasing concerns among U.S. policymakers and growing calls to counter Chinese influence in the region. As the U.S.-Chinese rivalry plays out in the region, Pan-American Strategic Advisors is providing guidance for actors across the Americas (both in the United States and in Latin America and the Caribbean) on how to navigate this complex relationship.

U.S. Southern Command and Defense Relations in the Americas
The U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) play an important role in shaping U.S.-Latin American and Caribbean relations. Not only does the U.S. military and defense establishment regularly engage with governments and militaries across the region, but also increasingly set the agenda for broader U.S. foreign policy toward the region and remain an important partner across the region. Understanding the role of the U.S. military in the broader relationship is critical to understanding the U.S. approach to the region. Our team closely tracks SOUTHCOM engagement and the broader defense relationships in the region to provide insights on the direction of U.S. foreign policy and potential opportunities and risks.
